Age – Average Age : At present, Mahesh is 37 years old and Suresh is 41 years old. Also the sum of the number of years for which they have worked in the organisation is 20

In an organisation, an employee retires when the sum of his/her age and the number of years he/she has worked in the organisation is 77. At present, Mahesh is 37 years old and Suresh is 41 years old. Also the sum of the number of years for which they have worked in the organisation is 20. If Suresh will retire five years after Mahesh, then for how many years would Suresh have worked in the organisation at the time Mahesh retires?

OA : Official Answer – 14.5

Understand this question with the help of a chart and then an equation

Employee	Current Age	Work Ex in Year	Retired after (yrs)	Age the time of Retirement (age and work ex both increases)
Mahesh	37 (given)	x (let)	y (let)	(37+y)+(x+y) =77 [77 is retirement age]
Suresh	41 (give)	20 -x (Work ex of both is 20- given)	y+5 (given Suresh retired after 5 years)	(41+(y+5))+((20-x)+(y+5))=77

Now equate the retirement age equation of both Mahesh and Suresh

(37+y)+(x+y) =77 = (41+(y+5))+((20-x)+(y+5))=77

After solving the above equation x= 17 and y = 11.5

So when Suresh is at the age of 41 years, his work ex is 20-x=20-17=3 years.

Now the question is the age of Suresh after y=11.5 years (at the time of Mahesh’s retirement)

The required work-ex in years of Suresh = 3 + 11.5 = 14.5 years
